What's Happening?
A big earthquake hits near the coast of alaska which triggered a tsunami warning all around the area, as it hit near the Alaska Peninsula at 10:15 p.m, it triggered the whole area for warnings about a tsunami coming big not big waves, Michael West who is the state seismologist with the Alaska Earthquake Center stated:
This is the largest earthquake to happen in the Alaska region since 1965
but it was stated that there were no damages or any kind of injuries caused by the earthquake but officials said that this statement could change if people that live nearby didn't take care.
Dave Snider, a tsunami warning coordinator stated that:
The good news is this does not look like a really significant event, Strong currents are still very likely, and it’s still likely we’ll see some damage but it’s not likely it will be catastrophic
The tsunami warning started on Wednesday but got debunked on Thursday morning when the biggest wave was about a half foot, but the earthquake was scary and did some damage all over Alaska, Mayer told the Anchorage Daily News:
“It started to go and just didn’t stop, It went on for a long time and there were several aftershocks, too. The pantry is empty all over the floor, the fridge is empty all over the floor.
Also, the school manager Paul Parker talked to the Anchorage Daily Newspaper and stated:
”We’re used to this. This is pretty normal for this area to get these kind of quakes, and when the tsunami sirens go off, it’s just something we do, that’s not something you ever get used to, but it’s part of the job living here and being part of the community.”
